Styx The Grand Illusion (1978)
1. The Grand Illusion
(4:38) |
I'll go out on a limb right now and say that this is the best Styx album that the band penned in their entire career. For a band that's known for doing bombastic rockers with all the arena rock stereotypes, this is actually a fairly reserved album. It's the closest that the band ever got to prog rock, and there are lots of great songs to be had. It's also a great concept too, with most of the songs loosely based on the dark side of superstardom, and is certainly a lot better than the later concept albums that Styx would produce. Anyway, no review would be complete without mention of Come Sail Away, the best song on the album, and also Cartman's favorite song, for all the Southpark people. It's one of the best power ballads ever, with one catchy as hell chorus, and a majestic vocal performance from DeYoung. The Grand Illusion, Fooling Yourself(Angry Young Man), and Miss America are definitely the best tracks, showcasing the band's abilities at their best, with some awesome keyboard playing from DeYoung. The Grand Finale is fantastic too, combining most of the melodies in the earlier tracks into one final spectacle. Overall, a solid AOR effort, and the best Styx album in their career. |
