L'Arc~en~Ciel SMILE (2004) 1. seppun
(4:24) |
Finally, after a 4 year hiatus and numerous solo projects for every member of the band, L'Arc~en~Ciel unites again to make a new album. Fans of the band will be pleased with yet another solid addition to their music. seppun, the first track, is a solid starter, with a solo guitar intro, followed by keyboard, and then the rest of the band. The highlight of this song is in Hyde's vocals, as it's pretty amazing how he can still hit those high notes after all that smoking, haha. Then comes one of the singles released for this album, READY STEADY GO, which is the second opening theme for Fullmetal Alchemist. It's a really simple, catchy, and straightforward rock piece that really makes it sound like the band's having fun. Nice song, but it got waaay too much exposure(due to FMA getting crazy popular). Lover Boy is a fantastic piece, in my opinion being one of the best songs on the album. Great strong guitar intro by Ken, but the real highlight of the piece is Yukihiro's drumming, and the personal touches that he adds in the transition sections. Feeling Fine is a really upbeat piece, with a very familiar drum intro. One of the more melodic songs on the album, and although it isn't very interesting musically, it's still a pleasure to listen to. Next is Time goes on, a nice little ballad with great basslines from Tetsu, with Ken joining in on his part halfway through the song. The highlight of this piece, if you haven't already been able to figure out from the previous sentence, is both of the guitars. Then comes one killer of a track, Coming Closer. Yukihiro just shines here, as this song is probably the most complex in terms of percussion on the album. One of the more aggressive pieces on the album. The next track, eien, is definitely the worst song on the album. It's just a really boring, noisy rock song with slightly distorted vocals from Hyde, all done at a really slow tempo. Then comes the most aggressive track on the CD, REVELATION, with a really loud electric guitar dominating most of the song. I actually end up skipping this track most of the time, simply because it's kind of a boring track. hitomi no juunin, the other single released for this album, is next. At first, I didn't really like this piece, but after a few listens, it's really grown on me. It begins with a very distinctive dual piano and electric guitar intro, and then moves on to the ballad, with some nice acoustic guitar as the background melody. The main highlight of this piece is Hyde, as this is a fantastic showcase of his vocal range, and the melody's really pretty as well. The album concludes with the English version of Spirit dreams inside, which was the theme song for the Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within movie. I really can't think of a better way to end this album, as this is definitely the best song on the album. This piece is a true showcase of all the band member's abilities, as they all come together to make an upbeat, yet mysteriously beautiful song with some of the best lyrics ever. So in the end, this is a decent album that any L'Arc~en~Ciel fan should eventually get. It's not one of their best albums, probably one of their worst actually(though you have to keep in mind that all of Laruku's albums are pretty good) and I'd say it wouldn't be a good album to serve as an introduction to the band for anyone(unfortunately, that is the case since a large number of people in the US got their first exposure to the band through FMA). It's still a solid comeback after those 4 years, and although this album isn't as excellent as say, heavenly or Tierra, it's a solid addition. |
