L'Arc~en~Ciel ark (1999) 1. forbidden
lover (6:01) |
ark was released alongside ray at the same time, and both of these albums are where Yukihiro's influence over the band's music begins to be felt. Between ark and ray, ark is the better album, with a grand total of 5(!) singles, and probably being the most experimental album in L'Arc~en~Ciel's career. There are still some straightforward songs though; Driver's High, which would be used as the first opening theme for the Great Teacher Onizuka anime, is my most favorite Laruku song of all time, a straight-up fast paced rock song that's formulaic, but still very enjoyable. HEAVEN's DRIVE has the catchiest chorus ever, and even has some horn accompaniment. DIVE TO BLUE has some amazing guitar work along with some of Hyde's best vocals ever, and Pieces is the obligatory ballad(one of their better ones). For the other less traditional songs, forbidden lover and Butterfly's Sleep stand out among them; the first track being a very epic and emotional piece, and Butterfly's Sleep is a really interesting atmospheric rock song with some really unique instrumentals. There's even a Hawaiian-sounding song in the form of Perfect Blue that manages to be fairly entertaining. The rest of the album doesn't quite hold up, though; Cradle is a really slow paced, spacey track that's really heavy on the keyboards that unfortunately is pretty boring. Larva is just a useless track in itself, being a crappy techno song(Yukihiro's influence, no doubt) and only serving the purpose of segueing into Butterfly's Sleep. Shinjitsu to Genjitsu to and What is love both are okay songs by themselves, but it's nothing you haven't heard before if you're been listening to Laruku since the beginning of their career. |
