L'Arc~en~Ciel HEART (1998) 1. LORELEY
(5:58) |
After L'Arc~en~Ciel's fourth album, True, the drummer Sakura would be arrested for drug possession, and thus was forced to leave the band. Superstars at this point, most bands would just crumble under this pressure, but Laruku pressed on and got Yukihiro(of Dies in Cries fame) as the new drummer. The result is HEART, an inconsistent album with higher production values that's not quite as strong as Laruku's previous albums, but still manages to be pretty enjoyable. LORELEY and winter fall provide a solid opening, with LORELEY as an epic and fairly slow paced rock piece with some very complex instrumentals and production, and winter fall as a really beautiful upbeat pop piece with horn and string accompaniment. Niji is easily the most recognizable song on the album, as it would be used as an ending theme for the Rurouni Kenshin anime. It's a very unique song, and I can't really describe it in any other words than just "experimental". Highly recommended. Promised land is a really interesting piece that is sort of an homage to the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever"(listen to the last section). milky way is an upbeat rock piece with some amazing acoustics and an awesome melody, Singin' in the Rain is a very laidback jazz rock piece, and Shout at the Devil is reminiscent of old Laruku in its intensity. The rest of the songs aren't quite as successful; birth! is a fairly boring fast paced rock piece, fate is another fairly unmemorable track, and Anata is just unbelievably over the top as an album closer that it's ridiculous. |
