Heart Dreamboat Annie (1976) 1. Magic Man (5:35) |
Seattle rockers Heart debut with an album that is heavily Zeppelin influenced, but unique enough to really let sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson shine. Given that this was 1976, they were one of the few true female led hard rockers at the time. After all these years, this is probably still one of their best albums. First off, the singles. Magic Man is about a girl trying to date a guy, with a lot of opposition from her mother. The lyrics are really fairytale like, and Ann Wilson's vocals are mysterious and ever-changing. Crazy On You has one of the best acoustic guitar intros ever recorded, and with more of Ann Wilson's powerful vocals. The three versions of Dreamboat Annie are all beautiful, all depicting a girl escaping everyday life through daydreaming. The result is lots of really dreamy(sorry, couldn't think of a better word) lyrics and a gentle vocal performance from Ann Wilson. There's even the usage of a banjo, diversifying the record even further. Soul Of The Sea is a very Zeppelin-ish ballad, and How Deep It Goes is another ballad with some of the best lyrics from Heart ever. In other words, there is no better way to get introduced to the band than this album. |
