brilliant green TERRA2001 (1999) 1. BYE!
MY BOY! (3:24) |
the brilliant green return a year after their debut album with TERRA2001, which turns out to be a much better album than the first. And Tomoko's vocals are as strident as ever. Although there are still some weak songs(I'm looking at you, Funny Girlfriend), this is a much more consistent album than the first, with better performances all around. BYE! MY BOY! makes for a decent opening song, although not quite as impressive as I'm In Heaven. Pretty catchy song, with a nice riff. I still find myself tapping out the opening riff on tables when I'm bored occasionally. Then comes ai no ai no hoshi, which I'll say right now is the best track on the album. It's a very happy-go-lucky song, with great musicianship all around, and in my opinion the best vocal performance from Tomoko on a buriguri song ever. After the great one-two punch of the opening songs, comes Brownie the cat, which is a fairly romantic laid-back piece. It's nice to listen to, but I still do end up skipping it sometimes. Still, it's worth listening to at least once for the lyrics. CALL MY NAME on the other hand is a very high energy piece with some pretty amusing lyrics, but Tomoko's voice falls flat in a few areas of the song here and there. Maybe We Could Go Back To Then was released earlier as a B-side, and the 76 version here doesn't sound any different than the original.. strange. Anyway, it's a fairly boring acoustic piece that's sort of depressing in its lyrics, but there isn't really much else I can say about it. Luckily, things pick up right back up with September Rain, with some of the best buriguri lyrics ever, and a catchy chorus to boot. This would probably be my favorite song on the album if it weren't for ai no ai no hoshi. The next song, Funny Girlfriend, is probably the worst song on the album.. it's a really fast ditzy piece with some truly bad lyrics, and a fairly overproduced performance from Tomoko. I guess you might like it if you're into super girly pop, but other than that, this is a terrible song. Luckily, Round and Round comes next to save the day, with some irony drenched lyrics. sono speed de was used as the opening/ending theme to some show, but I forgot what it was.. anyway, it's not hard to see why it was used, because it's a great song. The classic buriguri sound is employed here to full effect, with some great musicianship from everyone. Can't Stop Cryin' is a punk rock inspired piece, and personally I don't like it much, but if that's your thing you might find it appealing. The album then ends on a low note with nagai tameiki no youni, which oddly sounds pretty similar to There will be love there, but isn't quite as successful. There's another version of this song on the BYE! MY BOY! single, that I feel sounds a lot better than this version, so be sure to give that a listen if you can get your hands on it. |
