| bôa Twilight (2001) 1. Duvet (3:23) |
For the uninitiated, bôa are a fairly unknown band from Britain that has a style that I would say is most similar to that of The Cranberries. Jasmine Rogers' voice is beautiful, and is capable of expressing a wide range of emotions in her singing, and the band writes some of the best, most meaningful lyrics ever. Most people know the band for the first song, Duvet, which was used as the opening theme for the Serial Experiments Lain anime. It's easily the best song on this album, a beautiful and haunting moderate tempo soft rock piece with the perfect choice of arrangement. Other highlight tracks include Fool, the loudest track in the album, a very dynamic rock piece with one of Jasmine's most aggressive vocal performances ever. Elephant is a great acoustic piece with orchestral accompaniment that has some pretty interesting lyrics(I haven't quite figured out the meaning to them yet). Deeply is a really fun, aggressive song about confronting people when you have a problem. One Day is also a great rock piece, the only song on this album to have Steve Rodgers on vocals instead of Jasmine, and he does a fantastic job. Anna Maria is an awesome dance piece with heavy Spanish influence, and it has totally nonsensical lyrics, though this helps the song rather than take away from it, heh. The ending of it is pretty funny, too. Acoustic Duvet is a real treat, giving the song a much more relaxing feel. And finally, the album closes off with a kicker, Little Miss, which is a rollercoaster of emotions packed in a song about a woman who loves a man, but the man doesn't want to feel the same way and thus treats her like a sexual object. The ending of the song is also pretty interesting, as the style shifts completely in the last 30 seconds. Haven't figured out the meaning behind that yet. And then there's Drinking, a beautiful acoustic piece with some of the most sarcastic lyrics ever written, about alcoholism like the title suggests. "God save your children, should you have them" is one of the best lines ever. |
